About Us

Since 1991, we’ve specialized in helping retirement plans do better:

  • Better outcomes for your participants
  • Better understanding for you and all plan sponsor staff
  • Better liability prevention for plan sponsors

Way back in the early 90’s, our founders, both from traditional finance backgrounds, were getting tired of helping high net worth clients grow wealthier. Instead, they wanted to help the average person retire with a brighter future. So began Capital Research + Consulting.

Almost three decades later and now with over $4 billion under advisement, Capital Research + Consulting helps plan sponsors stay compliant and avoid liability while helping to improve participant outcomes. As a fee-only Registered Investment Advisor, CRC has delivered full-service 3(38) fiduciary services to a wide variety of clients.

As an innovator in the industry, we have created proprietary systems that benefit plan sponsors and participants:

Our Proprietary Early Warning System.

Recent litigation against plan sponsors has included focus on fund selection. Over the years, we’ve identified a handful of signals mutual funds give off prior to faltering. Our Early Warning System, which is proprietary to CRC, alerts us when any of these signals occur. At that time, we’ll research and recommend a suitable replacement. You’ll only find this at Capital Research + Consulting.

Superior Investment Options.

Target date funds are useful additions to the fund lineup, but have proven at times to be more risky and expensive than they should be. At CRC, we provide your participants with a better option. Freed of the product-driven aspect of target date funds which can create a drag on performance, we combine funds from different fund families based on performance, not on brand. Then we use active management strategies with low-fee index funds to help better control risk.  (Learn more about our Model Portfolios).

With our long history of helping plan sponsors and participants, we’re proud of the service we provide.

Frequently Asked Questions

1. Which retirement plan types do you help administer?

At Capital Research + Consulting, we can help with all of your retirement account types, both ERISA and non-ERISA plans. We most commonly act as 401(k), 403(b), and 457 plan consultants.

2. What types of clients do you work with most frequently?

With over 27 years of experience, we’ve been proud to serve a wide variety of plans and organizations. We’ve worked with small, medium and large plans but also specialize in helping municipalities and special districts with their unique retirement plan needs.

3. How do you charge?

At CRC our retirement plan consulting fees are structured as one simple, all-inclusive annual fee. You will know exactly how much you will pay each year. You will not receive extra charges or surprise bills.

4. Will you keep us abreast of trends and changes in the retirement plan space?

Yes! At CRC we schedule quarterly meetings, either in person or virtual, with our plan sponsor clients. During these meetings, we will review plan performance and keep you up to date with what we’ve been doing on your behalf. We’ll also update you on anything you need to know in the industry or having to do with regulation or compliance. So that means we’ll update you on trends related to popular topics including auto-enrollment, Roth options and more.

5. How often do you review retirement plan vendors?

We normally review vendors and contracts approximately every three years. Why? Well the market changes frequently and new entrants can help bring about lower fee options. Or, your plan may have grown and we may be able to negotiate price breaks. We will work with you to establish a schedule then we will do the legwork to collect and evaluate vendor choices. However, we always advise looking at both price and quality. While low prices are of course good, we don’t want to choose solely on price and then have a vendor that subjects you or your participants to liability or lower quality services.

6. Will you work with other professionals that I already employ?

Yes! As an independent consultant, we’re happy to coordinate and work directly with your choice of professionals. That said, as a fiduciary our loyalty will always lie with you and your participants.
